Check Engine Light
Most cars produced after 1980 and all new cars have a check engine light. When this light comes on, it’s often the first sign that there’s an emissions problem.
Exhaust Noise
Canadians are all too familiar with the loud rumble caused by a hole in the muffler or exhaust pipe. Of all the automotive parts on your car, the exhaust is the most vulnerable to rust. Road salt and other corrosive agents cause oxidation that will kill your exhaust system over time. If you’re just dealing with a small exhaust leak, you may be able to patch it with a muffler repair kit. Just keep in mind that this is only a temporary fix. Once rust takes hold it doesn’t let go!
Exhaust Back Pressure
If your car is running hotter than normal, you’ve lost some power or your fuel economy is down, you may be experiencing exhaust back pressure. A clogged catalytic converter is the most likely suspect and may even lead to stalling. Other exhaust system components can cause the same symptoms if damaged.
Inspect the entire system for obvious damage like a crushed tailpipe. Tap on the catalytic converter. If you hear something rattling inside, you’ve probably found the problem. If there’s nothing rattling inside the cat, the issue may be the muffler. A collapsed baffle or sound damper can clog things up and cause back pressure.
Need A New Exhaust System?
If your muffler has rusted out, the rest of the system is probably not far behind. Instead of just ordering a muffler, save yourself some time and headaches and order a whole new cat-back system from Mac auto. We’re the most trusted name in Canada for buying automotive parts online!
